Using the Amsler grid
A quick guide for patients
What is the Amsler grid?
The Amsler grid is a chart used to notice changes in central vision. It can help identify changes that need assessment by your eye doctor.
How is it used?
Use the chart in the full leaflet in good light, at reading distance. Wear reading glasses if prescribed. Cover one eye and look at the central spot, then repeat with the other eye.
What should I notice?
While looking at the centre, notice whether any lines appear irregular or wobbly. Mark the changes on the chart so you can show your eye doctor.
When should I contact my doctor?
Contact your eye doctor without delay if you notice irregular or wobbly lines. This test does not replace regular eye examinations. Follow your clinician’s advice about how often to use it.
