YAG laser capsulotomy
A quick guide for patients
Why might I need it?
After cataract surgery, the thin membrane supporting the new lens can become cloudy. This may make vision misty again. YAG laser capsulotomy makes an opening in that membrane.
What is the aim?
The aim is to restore vision to how it was after the cataract operation. Your eye-care professional will explain whether the treatment is appropriate for your eye.
Are there risks?
Possible complications include inflammation and, rarely, retinal detachment. Read the full leaflet and discuss the benefits, risks and alternatives with your care team.
When should I seek urgent help?
After treatment, attend a hospital emergency department for a sudden increase in floaters or flashes, a spreading dark shadow, excessive pain, loss of vision, or increasing redness. These symptoms need prompt assessment.
